Apple’s iOS 26.5 and iPadOS 26.5 release candidates introduce three functional changes: RCS messaging between iPhone and Android, a machine-learning-powered Suggested Places feature in Maps, and preparatory code for in-app advertising. A Pride-themed wallpaper and watch band are also included.
Overview
iOS 26.5 is a minor update that ships without new Siri features, deferring those to iOS 27. The release candidate is available to registered developers via the Settings app under General → Software Update. Apple plans to launch the update publicly next week, ahead of the WWDC 2026 keynote on June 8.
What’s new
Suggested Places in Maps The Maps app now recommends nearby locations based on recent searches and trending data. The feature uses on-device machine learning and does not require cloud processing.
RCS messaging End-to-end encrypted RCS messaging between iPhone and Android users returns after being removed from the iOS 26.4 public release. The feature is currently limited to developer testing.
Ads in Maps Apple has embedded code that enables in-app advertisements, though no ads are visible in the release candidate.
Third-party wearable support (EU only) In the European Union, Apple is testing proximity pairing, notification forwarding, and Live Activities for third-party wearables such as earbuds and smartwatches.
Pride wallpaper and watch band A new Pride-themed wallpaper and matching Apple Watch band are included.
Tradeoffs
- RCS: While RCS brings richer messaging features (read receipts, typing indicators, higher-resolution media), end-to-end encryption is only active during developer testing and may not persist in the final release.
- Suggested Places: The feature relies on local data, so recommendations may be less dynamic than cloud-powered alternatives.
- Ads in Maps: No ads are live yet, but the groundwork suggests a future monetization push.
When to use it
- Developers: Install the release candidate now to test RCS encryption and third-party wearable integrations.
- General users: Wait for the public release next week if you want the Pride wallpaper or Suggested Places feature.
Bottom line
iOS 26.5 is a transitional update that adds small but practical improvements while preparing for larger changes in iOS 27. The most notable additions—RCS and AI-powered place suggestions—are functional now, while Maps ads remain a future possibility.
